About
Barbara Erickson
I am truly inspired by my chosen field of work and find a genuine thrill in witnessing your growth and transformation as you pursue your goals. Change is constant in life and throughout the counselling process, I strive to tap into your agency, empowering you to influence the direction of that change. By tracking and reflecting on patterns in your stories, I provide you with the opportunity to make choices based on new insight. My goal is to both empower and challenge you, helping you become the person you choose to be in your relationships and in your life.
A Systemic Approach:
Originally trained in family systems therapy, I adopt a systemic approach when working with individuals, couples or families. Many aspects of our lives are interconnected, and this perspective enables us to explore the nuanced ways these elements interact. By anticipating the impact of one choice on other areas of your life, you can achieve more effective and lasting change.
Specialized Experience with Acquired Brain Injury:
I have developed a special interest in working with individuals who have sustained an acquired brain injury (ABI). As a former Executive Director of the Victoria Brain Injury Society, I gained deep insights into the profound impacts of this injury on the affected individual, their family and their friends. If you have sustained a brain injury, or if you’re in a relationship with someone who has, I am here to support you in navigating this significant life transition.
An Integrative Framework for Healing:
You are unique. As such, my therapeutic toolkit is diverse, drawing from various schools of thought including:
• Family Systems Theory
• Narratvie Therapy
• Body-Centred Therapy
• Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
• Positive Psychology
Additionally, as a registered personal trainer, I incorporate aspects of fitness into my practice, recognizing the profound impact of physical health on mental well-being. This integrative approach provides us with a wide range of treatment modalities to explore.
